He Yunchang 'Nirwana Flesh'

"Nothing can prevent us from turning

to unbounded imagination when we're faced
with hostile circumstances"

He Yunchang

Hosted by Brussels' Palais des Beaux Arts (Centre for Fine Arts) in April 2013 for a performance entitled "Nirvana Flesh", He Yunchang is an internationally-renowned Chinese artist, born in 1967, living and working in Beijing.

In his shows, He Yunchang, the most representative performer of the Chinese contemporary artistic scene, opens up a mythical dimension from which forces emerge to face uncompromising reality.
In "Nirvana Flesh" for example, the artist chooses a classic allusion to Chinese Buddhism, the rise and purification of the incandescent Phoenix. For 24 hours, in front of the audience, he gradually sets his clothing alight until it burns completely.

In He Yunchang's work, the importance attached to the virtue of persistence in the Chinese culture finds an exemplary illustration on a human-scale.
He Yunchang is an eminently political artist. Through performance as pure action, "Casting", "One meter of Democracy", he is part of a debate close to reality with a clear political and critical intention.
It is to consider this debate, with all the distance offered by photographs, that the Feizi Gallery invites you to its next exhibition, which will present He Yunchang's Solo Show.
