Mithu Sen, New Delhi, mixed media on Japanese kozo paper.

Mithu Sen for sure was one of the surprises at Art Stage Singapore 2012. These giant drawings, 350x240 cm each of a set of five, were made during her residency in Japan in 2008. Mithu Sen, born 1971 in West Bengal, blends popular erotic images with fantasies, self images, and emotional interactions.

A small but courageous crowd joined Gao Qiang at an ASS2012 supported event. Gao Qiang invited the people over to the stage for a warm hug, followed by a collective hug off stage, forming a spiral of hugging people, most of them never met before.

Daily Incantations, installation by Chen Zhen, 1996. The installation is made up of 101 Chinese chamber pots. The large globe like form is filled with discarded electronic communication tools. Speakers installed inside each pot are playing the sound of the ritual daily cleaning performed traditionally daily by Chinese women. Incantations, meaning repetitive 'chants' or old slogans. This sculptural installation of Chen Zhen (1955-2000) represents his reflexions on peronal experiences in Shanghai during the so-called cultural revolution.

Performance of Indian artist T Venkanna censored after Chinese protests

The performance of T Venkanna, sitting naked in front of a copy of Frida Kahlo's The Two Frida's (1939), inviting visitors of his booth to sit next to him,has been stopped after serious threats to the artist.

An official of Art Stage Singapore asked the artist to stop his act, after tabloids in China has focused on T Venkanna on their report of Art Stage, calling the artist an exhibitionist, and questioning if the performance has to be considered as art.
Mr. Abhay Maskara, owner of Gallery Maskara, didn't want to tell who advised him to stop the show. A lawyer was quoted saying the show could be against Singapore's law as an offense to appear naked in public.
T. Venkanna responded as an artist, by drawing his feelings into the gallery booth, which, was darkened and closed to visitors below age 21.

The vulnerable T. Venkanna was deeply moved by the questioning of his integrity as an artist. However, he said he wants to return next year to Singapore to confront again the audience with his performance art.

T. Venkanna is an acclaimed artist, living in Baroda, India, showed at Saatchi London in 2007 see http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/artists/t_venkanna.htm?section_name=new_india
