ARAKI Ojo Shashu - Photography for the Afterlife: Alluring Hell | Foam
New work Araki till March 11, 2015 @Foam, Amsterdam
A unique show of world acclaimed photographer Nobuyoshi Araki (Tokyo, 1940) called qARADISE, created mainly in 2013, shows colorful flowers arranged with plastic, often broken, toys and dolls against a dark background.
Next to qParadise, at Foam, one of Europe's most prestigious photography museum, Araki shows his series Alluring Hell from 2008. Why did Araki painted over his black-and-white photo's of nude women? Was it sadness, anger, the drive to put color on his black & white ladies, or was it a discovery tour in the dimension between photography and painting? Whatever his motives were, the results are eye-catching as well as confusing.

He Yunchang 'Nirwana Flesh'
"Nothing can prevent us from turning
to unbounded imagination when we're faced
with hostile circumstances"
with hostile circumstances"
He Yunchang
Hosted by Brussels' Palais des Beaux Arts (Centre for Fine Arts) in April 2013 for a performance entitled "Nirvana Flesh", He Yunchang is an internationally-renowned Chinese artist, born in 1967, living and working in Beijing.
In his shows, He Yunchang, the most representative performer of the Chinese contemporary artistic scene, opens up a mythical dimension from which forces emerge to face uncompromising reality.
In "Nirvana Flesh" for example, the artist chooses a classic allusion to Chinese Buddhism, the rise and purification of the incandescent Phoenix. For 24 hours, in front of the audience, he gradually sets his clothing alight until it burns completely.
In He Yunchang's work, the importance attached to the virtue of persistence in the Chinese culture finds an exemplary illustration on a human-scale.
He Yunchang is an eminently political artist. Through performance as pure action, "Casting", "One meter of Democracy", he is part of a debate close to reality with a clear political and critical intention.
It is to consider this debate, with all the distance offered by photographs, that the Feizi Gallery invites you to its next exhibition, which will present He Yunchang's Solo Show.
